St. Joseph of the Holy Family founded St. Joseph's School in 1860 as part of its community outreach mission. At the time, the church stood as the only Catholic parish on Manhattan's west side, so even though the school started with 30 students, it quickly grew. By 1880, the school faced a problem--with close to 200 students enrolled and more joining each year, the work of its original, small staff was not enough. The school's prayers were answered in 1882, when five School Sisters of Notre Dame arrived to help. But St. Joseph's soon faced new challenges.
